Slawomir Mrozek (6/29/1930 – 8/15/2013) was a Polish playwright and cartoonist. Mrozek, at first, made a living wrinting humorous articles, and later began writing plays. His theatrical works belong to the genre of Absurd drama, and the sheer absurdity of his plays helped him evade the communist censorship.

Mrozek's first play, The Police, was published in 1958. His another play, Tango (1965), written about a family saga, made him one of the most recognizable Polish contemporary playwrights in the world. It became Mrozek's most successful play. In 1975 he wrote another play Emigranci (The Emigrants), a bitter and ironic portrait of two emigrants in Paris. His plays are now considered comedy classics by many.

Story:  Powerful tragi-comedy in the basement. With the devastating humor, the absurd shakes us, and the irony bites us. The words of strong sensitivity and rare density. In a sordid cellar of a beautiful building, two emigrants who are completely opposite (ethics/aesthetics/affect/intellect) have a strange New Year's Eve. On stage, we find unbearable incommunicability, pathos of exile and nostalgy. The proletarian, a workaholic, uses his strength like a tool, so eager to save money, to return home: making himself a slave in the process. The intellectual, anti-everything (capitalism-totalitarianism-materialism-consumerism), dreams of writing a book about freedom: which becomes his prison.
